Volunteer with WLRP
Join the Wôpanâak Language Reclamation Project as a volunteer and contribute to a powerful movement to reclaim the Wôpanâak language and preserve our cultural heritage. Volunteers play a vital role in supporting our programs, events, and day-to-day operations. Whether helping with language classes, cultural activities, or community outreach, your time and skills help strengthen our mission and deepen community connections.
Please note: Volunteers must be citizens of one of the four Wampanoag tribes served by WLRP—Mashpee, Aquinnah, Herring Pond, or Assonet.
If you’re passionate about language, culture, and community, we welcome you to explore current opportunities and get involved. Together, we can ensure that the Wôpanâak language thrives for generations to come.
Volunteer Requirements for Language Committee Members:
In accordance with WLRP’s bylaws (Article II, Section 4), all Language Committee members are required to contribute 10 hours of volunteer time each year to support the work of WLRP. These hours can be fulfilled in many ways—helping at events, distributing materials, preparing learning spaces, or assisting with outreach.
Committee members are responsible for:
-
Logging and submitting their volunteer hours to the designated Volunteer Coordinator.
-
Keeping track of their time and activities throughout the year.
Volunteer opportunities will be shared by the Volunteer Coordinator, who also compiles hours and reports them to the WLRP Committee at the end of each school year. (Coordinator contact information to be announced.)
Current Opportunity: Volunteer at the 2025 Mashpee Wampanoag Powwow
We’re excited for the upcoming Mashpee Wampanoag Powwow from July 4–6, 2025, and we’re inviting Language Committee members and language learners from the four Wampanoag communities to fulfill some or all of your volunteer hours at this important event.
WLRP will host an outreach booth at the Powwow to share free materials—books authored by staff and tribal members, bookmarks, brochures, magnets—and offer raffles to help spread awareness of our classes, immersion camps, and school-based programs. This is a powerful way to tell our shared story and let the wider public know: “We Are Still Here.”
